Major Archbishop & The Major Archiepiscopal Curia

Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil, Major Archbishop and head of the Syro-Malabar Church, was born in Parur in Ernakulam District on May 29, 1927. He was ordained as a Redemptorist priest in 1954.

Mar Varkey Vithayathil was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese in 1996, and archbishop in 1997. In 199, the Vatican appointed archbishop Mar Varkey Vithayathil as Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church.

Major Archbishop Mar Varkey Vithayathil was made Cardinal in 2001.

The Major Archiepiscopal Curia

The office of the Syro-Malabar Major Archbishop is called the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Curia, and is located atop a picturesque hillock at Mount St Thomas, Kakkanad, about 12 KM distant from Ernakulam.

The Curia accommodates the administrative offices of the Syro-Malabar Church and the archdiocesan tribunal.

The Curia also accommodates the St Thomas Christian Museum that houses a magnificent collection of sculptures, portraits, books, models, tools and utensils used by ancient St Thomas Christians, besides hosting an informative audio-visual presentation about the St Thomas Christians and the Syro-Malabar Church.
