Idukki is Kerala's largest district by area and least densely populated district. Idukki is also one of the most beautiful areas of Kerala and India, with its abundant wildlife, eye-catching greenery, and striking hill stations making it one of the world's most sought after tourist spots.
Idukki district comprises dense forests, mountainous terrains, and vast stretches of vegetation. It is home to several world-famous tourist attractions such as Munnar, Thekkady, Kumily, Devikulam, Idukki Dam, Moolamattom, Pallivasal, Eravikulam, Mattupetty, Thommankuthu, Ponmudy, Vagamon, etc.
A ride across the district is going to be a wonderful experience to anyone, thanks to neat stretches of roads sandwiched between dense forests, spectacular landscapes, breathtaking ravines, serene tea estates, dazzling waterfalls, and so on, and with the numerous amazing hair pin turns on the road adding a touch of adventure. Places with such names as Rajamala, Rajamudy, Rajapuram, Rajakad, Rajakumary, Karimala, Kuyilimala, and the like are certain to arouse the interest of any visitor.
The diocese of Idukki was erected in December 2002, bifurcating the diocese of Kothamangalam. The eparchy was inaugurated on March 2, 2003. Mar Mathew Anikuzhikattil was appointed as the first bishop of Idukki diocese on March 2, 2003.
Foranes, Parishes, Population
There are nine foranes under the Idukki diocese. The total number of parishes under all these nine foranes is 126.
The population of Syro-Malabar Catholics in the diocese is close to 2,60,000.
Bishop's House & Cathedral Church
The Diocesan House is situated at Karimpan in Idukki District.
St George's Cathedral, the diocesan Cathedral under construction, is located on a beautiful hillock at Vazhathope, about 4 KM distant from Karimpan on the way to Cheruthoni.
