Diocese of Kothamangalam
Kothamangalam is a large town in Ernakaulam district of Kerala. It is the gateway to the High Ranges and boasts of a well-educated society with beautiful locations, modern amenities, and several institutions of higher education.
The diocese of Kothamangalam was established in the year 1956, and inaugurated in January, 1957. Mar Mathew Pothanamuzhy was appointed as the first bishop of the diocese of Kothamangalam in 1957. On his retirement in 1977, Mar George Punnakkottil was appointed as the bishop.
The Kothamangalam diocese initially encompassed the areas of the current Idukki diocese also, until the new Idukki diocese was formed in 2002.
The diocesan cathedral is St George's Cathedral, located at the High Range Junction, the centre of Kothamangalam town.
There are 12 foranes under the Kothamangalam diocese, with the parishes under all foranes together numbering 113.
The cathedral vicar is Fr Cherian Kanjirakombil, who took over from Fr Jose Monippilly in May, 2005.
In May 2005, Fr Jose Monippilly finished his commendable service for more than 7 years as cathedral vicar.
