Diocese of Mananthavady

Mananthavady is one of the three major places of Wayanad district that is nicknamed 'the Green Paradise', the other two places being Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery. The Wayanad district is an extremely popular tourist attraction, being home to several enchanting settings such as hills, cascades, lakes, estates, forests, wildlife sanctuaries, caves, and paddy fields.
Wayanad is an agrarian district, and has large expanses of paddy fields, vegetable and fruit cultivation, rubber plantations, crops such as pepper, coconut, arecanut, coffee, cashew, etc. All in all, Mananthavady is a lovely place in Wayanad district with nature's beauty at its best.
The diocese of Mananthavady was formed on March 1, 1973, bifurcating today's Archdiocese of Thalassery. Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy (present archbishop of Trichur) was appointed as the first Bishop of Mananthavady diocese in 1973. On his transfer as the Bishop of Thamarassery in 1995, Msgr Joseph Kaniamattom took over as Administrator of the diocese. In January 1997, Mar Emmanuel Pothanamuzhy CMI was consecrated as the second Bishop of Mananthavady diocese. Mar Emmanuel Pothanamuzhy passed away on April 6, 2003, following which Msgr George Najaralakatt was appointed as Administrator of the diocese.
In March 2004, Rev. Fr Jose Porunnedom was nominated as Bishop of Mananthavady diocese. Mar Jose Porunnedom was ordained Bishop on May 15, 2004.
The Mananthavady diocese encompasses Wayanad district, parts of Malappuram and Kannur districts, Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu, and Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Mandya, Mysore, and Chamarajnagar districts of Karnataka.
Foranes, Parishes, Population
There are 12 foranes under the Mananthavady diocese. The total number of parishes is 143. In addition, the diocese has 12 filial churches and five mission regions also.
The population of Syro-Malabar Catholics in the diocese is nearly 1,70,000.
Bishop's House & Cathedral Church
The Diocesan House is situated on Kozhikode Road about 3 KM from Mananthavady town.
St Joseph's Cathedral, the Diocesan Cathedral, is located atop a beautiful hillock at Kaniyaram on Thalassery Road, about 3 KM from Mananthavady town.
