Diocese of Palghat (Palakkad)
|
Palakkad (Palghat) is Kerala's second largest district by area, second only to Idukki district. Thanks to the huge production of rice and grains in the district, Palghat is known as the granary (nellara) of Kerala.
The district has large expanses of forests; in fact, forests cover nearly a third of the total area. The Palghat district has several other captivating locations too, such as hills, rivers, paddy fields, and cultivations, besides mountains, dams, and the majestic stretch of Western Ghats on the border.
A coveted tourist location, the Palakkad district is home to quite a number of dream spots – Malampuzha dam, Nelliyampathy hills, Silent Valley National Park, Parambikkulam Wildlife Sanctuary, to name a few.
The diocese of Palghat was established in 1974, bifurcating the then diocese of Trichur. The diocese encompasses the Palakkad district of Kerala, and Coimbatore, Karur, and Erode districts of Tamil Nadu.
In 1974, Mar Joseph Irimpen was appointed as the first bishop of the diocese of Palghat. Mar Joseph Irimpen retired as bishop in 1994. In 1996, Mar Jacob Manathodath was appointed bishop of Palghat diocese, and has been serving as bishop since.
