Human Sexuality
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary [www.m-w.com] defines the term "sexuality" as follows:
- the quality or state of being sexual
- the condition of having sex
- sexual activity
- expression of sexual receptivity or interest especially when excessive
Contrary to popular perception, sexuality is more than sexual intercourse and sexual acts. Apart from sexual activities, sexuality also involves who we are, what our personality is like, our relationship with others, our thoughts, actions, feelings, values, etc.
In their book Understanding Human Sexuality, authors J.S. Hyde and S. DeLamater say: "Although most people think sexuality primarily involves intercourse and other forms of genital sexual pleasuring, sexuality is, in fact, a broad term used to describe human sexual development, in all its forms, across the lifespan. This development is influenced by physiological, social, biological, and cultural factors and includes self-perception as well as the social roles and behaviours that we adopt."
Being sexually active is not an overnight process but a gradual one. Sexuality differs from man to man. It is influenced by physical and mental conditions such as age, pain, stress, fatigue, depression, fear, etc.
Sexuality is a natural, important, and healthy part of our lives, and is associated with everyone regardless of religious, social, regional, or physical aspects, although these facts do affect sexuality.
The Bible has several references to sexuality and sexual sins. Sexual sins are more grave than others.
