The development of sexual cells is a complex process that starts at conception. At the moment of conception, when the union of an ovum with a spermatozoon takes place, the combination of genetic materials from each of the parents causes a process called sexual differentiation. Thus, already from the moment of conception, the sex of the foetus is determined. The chromosome-constitution of sexual cells is:
ovum = only one type = 22A + x spermatozoon = two varieties = 22A + x and 22A + y
The foetus is male if the chromosome formula is 44A + xy
and female if it is 44A + xx.
