Christian Pilgrimage
A pilgrim is a person who travels to sacred places or shrines for religious reasons. A pilgrimage is a journey undertaken by a pilgrim.
When we visit Velankanni or Malayattoor, we undertake a pilgrimage. Even short trips to Mannanam and Bharananganam are nothing but pilgrimages.
The Holy Land beckons every Christian pilgrim. So do Rome and Turin in Italy. Pilgrims world over dream of visiting Lisieux in France and Avila in Spain.
Many priests can vividly recount their visiting the Mount Sinai.
For devotees of the Virgin, Fatima in Portugal, Lourdes in France, and Medjugorje in Herzogovina always remain a dream destination.
A pilgrimage is a journey to strengthen one's faith, to be away from the daily humdrum, and to see places that are historically significant or where something extraordinary happened. Some people take pilgrimages to honour a vow, and some as thanksgiving. Some do it to savour rich heritage and admire historical places. Some expect transformations in their lives, and some others seek miracles. Yet, some look forward to forgiveness and salvation.
People have undertaken spiritual journeys right from the ancient times. The three wise men - the Magi - were perhaps the first to do it when they trekked from the East to Bethlehem, guided by a star, to see baby Jesus.
Pilgrimage provides you with new information and insights. They enliven your faith and prepare you to be more confident to face tomorrow's challenges.
