Maundy Thursday

"This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me." (Lk 22:19)

Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday marks a number of significant events starting with Jesus' preparation for Last Supper and ending with Jesus' arrest by Roman soldiers.

The day before the Passover Festival, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, and told them: "I have set an example for you, so that you will do just what I have done for you." (John ch.13)

On the day of the Passover (Festival of Unleavened Bread), the disciples prepared the Passover meal as Jesus had told them. When the hour came, Jesus took His place at the table with the apostles. He said to them, "I have wanted so much to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer! For I tell you, I will never eat it until it is given its full meaning in the Kingdom of God." While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it and eat it. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me." In the same way after the supper, Jesus took a cup, gave thanks to God, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink it, all of you. This is my blood, which seals God's covenant, my blood poured for many for the forgiveness of sins." (Matthew ch. 26 & Luke ch.22 - Good News Bible, TEV)

This denotes the institution of the Holy Eucharist.

Jesus then went to pray at Gethsemane. The day also marks Judas's betrayal of Jesus leading to His arrest by Roman soldiers.

All four Gospels contain vivid narrations of the events of Maundy Thursday. Matthew ch.26, Mark ch.14, Luke ch.22, John ch.13 & ch.18. The Lord's Supper also in: 1 Cor 11:23-25

Maundy Thursday observations comprise special Holy Mass, enactment of Jesus' washing the feet of disciples, dividing the bread, adoration of the Eucharist, etc.
