Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday is the first day of the Holy Week. The day marks Jesus' triumphant entry into the town of Jerusalem. Jesus, accompanied by His disciples, rode on a donkey. As He entered Jerusalem like a king, a large crowd of people spread their cloaks on the road; some others cut branches from palm trees and spread them on the road. They sang praises for Him waving palm leaves, proclaiming him as the messianic king: "Praise to David's Son! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God! God bless the King of Israel!" (Matthew ch.21 & John ch.12 - Good News Bible, TEV)
Jesus' triumphant entry into the town infuriated the Pharisees and his enemies.
Palm Sunday is also called the Passion Sunday to suggest the beginning of the Holy Week that includes Jesus’ final hours and His sufferings and agonizing journey to the Calvary and crucifixion.
All four Gospels carry accounts of Jesus' ride into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. These are: Mk 11:1-11, Mt 21:1-11, Lk 19.28-40, and Jn 12.12-19
Palm Sunday observations include special Holy Mass, reading of Gospel verses on Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, blessing and distribution of palm leaves, procession commemorating Jesus' ride, and also beginning of meditation on Jesus' passion and sufferings.
