Religious Fundamentalism
Fundamentalism, it its basic sense, refers to an attitude of strict and relentless adherence and observance of a set of rules and principles. Those who hold this kind of view are called fundamentalists. They are also known as conservatives.
Religious fundamentalism is characterized by the condemnation of those who are different in their faith. Religious fundamentalism is not limited to any particular religion or belief, but held by many religions including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism. Religious intolerance and conflict in different parts of the world today are the aftermath of Religious fundamentalism.
Christian fundamentalism is characterized by the rejection of modern teachings and interpretations of the Bible, and the adherence to stringent literal meanings. Some members of Protestants and Catholics are the common conservative groups in Christianity. Fundamentalists in the Catholic Church reject all revisions put forward by the Vatican Council II and steadfastly maintain traditional beliefs and conventional practices.
In a couple of pages here, we will take a look at the growing menace of Christian fundamentalism in India, including sectarian movements in Kerala.
These reports are from Module-1 of Section-II of the Bible-cum-Theology Course for the Laity - 2004, DVK, Bangalore.
