Review of Charismatic Renewal Movement

It is a fact that the Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church has given hope and comfort for hundreds of thousands of people. The truth that God is the centre of human life as well as Christian life is presented in powerful and effective way in the Renewal programmes. Deep reflections on the Trinity and God's providence, attractive presentation of Jesus Christ as a person, exchange of Jesus' message with great freshness, "re-initiation" into the life of the Church, rare experience of a meaningful worship and liturgy, etc. are some of the factors that make Charismatic Renewal a transforming experience for ordinary people.

Along with these positive points, Charismatic Renewal has also caused considerable confusion in many believers. "Emotionalism" and "running after the spectacular" sometimes defeat the essential purpose of Charismatic Renewal. For the unthinking people, this may lead to imbalances and distortions in physical and spiritual life. In such programmes, sometimes overemphasis is given to healings and other manifestations of gifts. Due to poor quality of spiritual and intellectual formation, some people fall into fundamentalist way of thinking.

Also, prayer and worship with expectations of quick and ambitious fulfillments sometimes makes participants dejected and desperate.

Notwithstanding the above shortcomings, Charismatic Renewal has established itself as one of the most effective ways in which the Holy Spirit is active in transforming the lives of millions.
